UK UTR: What Is It Used For in a UK LTD?
The UTR, or Unique Taxpayer Reference, is a reference used by the UK tax authority in various tax contexts. Its use depends on the situation and type of obligation involved.
Why is the UTR important?
When a UK company needs to interact with HMRC for certain tax procedures, a tax reference may be required. The UTR should be distinguished from other company identifiers, including the Companies House registration number.
Companies House and HMRC: two different bodies
Companies House mainly handles company registration. HMRC administers tax matters. A UK LTD can therefore have separate procedures with each organization.
What if you are a non-resident?
Obligations depend on the activity, structure and circumstances. An international entrepreneur should check the applicable procedures rather than assume that incorporation alone resolves tax matters.
